The overall theme of 1 John is "a recall to the fundamentals of the faith", which he expresses the absolute character of Christianity in very simple terms. This is a time of false teaching invading the church like Docetism and Irenaeus which destroyed the true humanity of Jesus and the atonement as well. John wrote to the church to reassure those reamining faithful and to combat false teachings. When sound faith. obedience and love operate in concert together they result in happiness, holiness and assurance.
